Humour (Humor)
Explanatory Text (English)
Historically, "humour" (or humor) refers to a person's temperament, disposition, or prevailing state of mind, rooted in the ancient physiological theory of four cardinal fluids that determined one's character. In contemporary social and psychological discourse, "humour" functions as a near-synonym for mood—a pervasive affective state that defines one's disposition or general outlook without being focused on a specific object or event. As a term in this lexicon, Humour is essential for tracking the conceptual evolution of internal affective states over time, linking the medieval and early modern understanding of temperament to modern notions of Stimmung and Mood. It emphasizes the enduring, constitutional aspects of affective experience, which serve as the subjective filter through which external atmospheres are perceived.
